Timber bracket size guide: nominal vs actual

Measure the real size, then pick the set.

Timber is sold by nominal size, but planed timber is smaller. Rough-sawn and full-dimension timber can be the full size. Brackets have to fit the real size, so measure before you order.

How to measure

  1. Measure the face of each member where a plate lands, not just the post.
  2. Measure in a couple of places; rough timber varies.
  3. Note any member that's a different size (a 6x8 rafter on 8x8 posts, for example).

Strap width

King-post with diagonals sets are named by strap width (4", 6", 8"). Pick a strap a little narrower than your timber face so the steel sits inside the edges.

Plate thickness

Standard (7ga): 7 gauge A36, 0.1793" (about 3/16"). Heavy (1/4"): 1/4" A36. Priced by quote (about +$80–$90 on a 6-plate set). Heavier plate is priced by quote.

Odd sizes, mixed sizes and full-dimension timbers are welcome through the custom quote. We send a dimensioned drawing before we cut.
