How to finish raw steel brackets
Clean, then paint, clear, oil, or let it rust.
Every soft-launch set ships raw: laser-cut, deburred, unfinished steel. Raw steel left outdoors will rust. That's normal, not a defect, and some people want exactly that look. Here are your options.
1. Clean first
Steel arrives with a light oil film and dark mill scale on the faces. Wipe it with a degreaser or mineral spirits. For paint, scuff with a wire wheel or 80–120 grit, or use a vinegar soak to loosen mill scale, then rinse, dry right away, and finish the same day before flash rust starts.
2. Pick a finish
| Finish | Look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rust-inhibiting primer + exterior enamel (e.g. satin black) | Classic black hardware | Outdoors, longest lasting |
| Clear coat (lacquer or clear enamel) | Raw steel color | Indoors or covered porches; recoat as needed |
| Boiled linseed oil or paste wax, baked or buffed | Dark, hand-finished | Indoors and sheltered spots |
| Let it rust | Brown patina | Rustic outdoor builds; rust can stain wood and stone below |
3. Paint before you hang
Finish on the bench, let it cure, then install. Touch up fastener heads after.
